LOCAL CAROLINA STYLE CHORUS WOWS JUDGES

CONOVER

The Carolina Style Chorus of Sweet Adelines International took the bronze at the Harmony Classic Division A Competition July 14 in San Antonio, Texas. This 39 member chorus has been singing together since 1973, and this year wowed the judges and audience with their creative and musical 15 minute entertainment package.

The Carolina Style Chorus, lead by director Jean Danaher has been competing in their region for 10 years under Jean’s direction and has placed in the top five overall six times. They have also won the Small Chorus Division four times. Placing third this year in the Harmony Classic Division A Competition was a major achievement.

Members of the chorus include a mother and daughter combination as well as identical twin sisters who hold the director and assistant director positions. Members gather from 10 counties around western North Carolina to rehearse each week. They have also committed to performing at least five charitable events during the year, but are involved in several community events, such as the Crime Prevention Awareness Week for the Conover Police Department, the Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade in Newton and Conover, the Christmas Village Celebration in Shelby, the Lions Club Annual Dinner Meeting in Shelby and more.

Each fall, the chorus coordinates “The Festival of Tables” in their region and has become increasingly popular around the area, bringing in visitors who have driven over three hours to attend. The festival includes a table decoration contest and a fashion show that features clothing and commentary provided by a local ladies boutique, where models have ranged in age from 7 to 70. The fashion show is followed by an upbeat chorus performance, where all singers in the audience are asked to join in.

Sweet Adelines International has over 1,200 quartets around the world, over 600 choruses ranging in size from 15 to 200 members, and over 27,000 female members, all singing a capella harmony, barbershop style.
